Moving and Renovating a House

In 2007 – 2008, I purchased a house that was destined to be torn down and moved it to a new site within city limits. I designed the basement and several adjustments to the house all while working within city building codes.

Below are some very sketchy sketches of some of the construction plans I made as part of the house re-building process.

More gory details about the house and how the daylight basement would fit into the site. So many contractors thought this was a garage and couldn’t understand why the garage door faced the creek. Hmm…

The basement has three giant picture windows facing out towards the creek which runs through the backyard.

Eventually I hope to create a site that chronicles the evolution of this house from country farmhouse to bare bones to urban bungalow, with lessons learned and battles fought, but you can see a set of photos on Flickr documenting the process.

This is the rough drawing of how the house rests on the site. After some serious arm-wrestling between me, the city and the electric company, the house was moved further over to the left and the driveway and parking wrapped around to the other side of the house.
